Of course, they will literally sit on your lap but they aren’t a “lap dog” in the lazy sense. While they can adjust to a more sedentary lifestyle, they need plenty of exercise to keep them happy, healthy, and at a proper weight. Dachshunds were bred as hunting dogs so they have plenty of energy and stamina. Many people mistakenly choose a small dog because they don’t think they need much exercise. If you work long hours, or can’t devote a significant portion of your non-working hours to your Dachshund, you may want to get a dog breed that is less social. usually doing things that make you angry and/or aren’t safe for them. An unhappy Dachshund will find ways to busy themselves…. A happy Dachshund likes to spend a lot of time with their people. These things can be overcome but it can take a lot of patience and a Dachshund may never be 100% potty trained. They are also prone to separation anxiety which can lead to your Dachshund peeing on the floor as soon as you leave. And every fall when the weather turns cold, it turns into what I like to call “pooping in the house season.” Many Dachshunds don’t like to potty in the cold and wet so they will go out, run right back inside, and then go potty on the floor. Dachshunds are notoriously hard to potty train. They will boss you around if they can and, even if they have been trained (Yes, it is possible to train a Dachshund), they sometimes choose to do what they want over what you want. That means they aren’t always the best for for first-time dog owners. Dachshunds are stubborn and “tenacious” according to the AKC breed description.There are a lot of reasons why the Dachshund breed might not be right for you.ĭachshunds can be wonderful companions but are not a good fit for everyone.
