![]() In June 2015 we released "The Van Leeuwen Artisan Ice Cream Cookbook", sharing over 100 vegan and classic recipes, along with stories, from the past 8 years. Our dedication to quality is tireless and we are constantly developing and perfecting our recipes. What we began in the kitchen of our shared Brooklyn apartment back in 2007, has grown into a mini ice cream empire with stores and trucks in NYC and LA and pints in grocery stores. Both recipes result in a rich, decadent, naturally perfect ice cream. The Vegan scoops are made with house made cashew milk, organic coconut milk, organic extra virgin coconut oil, organic cane sugar, pure cocoa butter and organic carob bean. The Classic scoops are crafted with nothing more than fresh milk and cream, cane sugar and egg yolks. We make all our ice creams from scratch in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Each flavor is a celebration some of the worlds best artisan producers and farmers. Van Leeuwen Classic and Vegan ice creams are made with just a handful of fresh ingredients. We set out to revive the classic american ice cream truck and the art of traditional ice cream making, using ingredients perfected by nature not science. We research and seek out well reviewed/rated ice creams whenever we travel and I’ll say we have place Van Leeuwen in the top ten in the US after our visit. We started Van Leeuwen Artisan Ice Cream in the Spring of 2008 out of a buttery yellow truck on the streets of NYC. A single scoop sundae with brown sugar cookie dough chunk topped with salted caramel sauce, hot fudge, and whipped cream. I decided step outside my normal choice range to try something I came up with while waiting in line. Very customer friendly! She pronounced the ice cream as every bit as good as B&R’s Chocolate Mousse Royale (her fave). We also make all our own add-ins from scratch (cakes, cookies, crumbles, jams, swirls) right (here) in Brooklyn. For our classic ice creams, we use grass-fed milk & cream from local farms, pure cane sugar, and lots of organic egg yolks. I was doing the ordering and I know she enjoys honeycomb candy, which they have here as a flavor, and the young man was kind enough to include a sample spoon of this alongside the chocolate fudge. Specialties: We make everything from scratch using the absolute best ingredients and never any filler gums or stabilizers. The wife went with the type of flavor that is here go to all the time-chocolate fudge brownie. None of those were inspiring to us on this visit so we chose flavors from the more traditional side of the menu. The vegan offerings appeared to be a big draw, at least during our visit. Plenty of time to peruse the menu choices while waiting.
